Residents' wish comes true this Christmas

Care home residents Peggy Alders, Gladys Conradi, Beryl Johnston and Eileen Taylor, will be sending out over 5,000 Christmas cards this year.

That’s because the craft group from Bupa’s Copper Beech Nursing Centre in Uckfield had their design chosen to be one of Bupa Care Services’ official Christmas cards for 2009.

Residents from all Bupa's 302 UK care homes were eligible to enter the competition to create a festive design for the company’s Christmas card. Peggy, Gladys, Beryl and Eileen’s joint entry triumphed over 600 others so they will now see their picture printed on 5,200 Christmas cards.

Patricia High, care home manager said: “We are really pleased for the ladies. They love getting together and being creative so it’s great news that one of their paintings has been selected as this year's winning Christmas card. We think the traditional scene of a partridge in a pear tree really captures the festive season.”

Peggy, who was an activity coordinator herself, has always been creative and joins in enthusiastically with all the activities organised at the home. Gladys a keen needlewoman and knitter in the past, tries her hand at most of the arts and crafts activities. Great-grandmother Beryl has attended the sessions since she arrived at Copper Beech over two years ago. And Eileen, who spent most of her life in London, has taken up art and crafts since arriving at the home last Christmas. This group gives the ladies a chance to chat, enjoy each other’s company while using their creative abilities.

Leading the group was activity coordinator Penny Stapleton who said: “The ladies in our craft group always enjoy taking part in our arts sessions. We are thrilled to bits that one of their paintings has been selected as one of this year's winning Christmas card design.”

Not only will the craft group's winning design be seen by thousands of people this Christmas, they also received £50 worth of art and craft supplies for their home.
