The Bupa care homes team is celebrating its own “gold rush” of top awards across a range of caring categories.
Leading the way was chef Suzanne Hulse from Bupa care home Ashley Court in, Surrey, who triumphed in a Masterchef-style cook-off, to win the title of ‘2008 Care Chef of the Year’ at The National Care Awards held in London.
Praising her culinary skills. Helena Stroud, of The National Care Awards said: “The judges chose Suzanne because the meal was very well-balanced, beautifully presented, flavoursome, easy to eat and made use of traditional, locally-sourced ingredients.”
Delighted Suzanne said: "I would like to dedicate this award to my husband John for 10 years of supporting me working long hours, weekends and Christmas Days. I would like to thank my home manager Ladan French for her constant encouragement and support, and I would also like to thank Bupa for giving me the opportunity to meet people’s individual needs and preferences.”
Hot on her heels came Wendy Fine of Maes-y-Wennol residential home in Wales who has just captured the prestigious 2008 Welsh Care Chef of the Year.
It was a double celebration for Wendy, as the award not only marked her culinary achievement, but enabled her to retire on a high point after 12 years’ service at the home.
The manager of Maes-y-Wennol, Sandra Holt said: “Wendy is a shining example of our high standards. She always goes that extra mile to ensure residents’ individual needs are met and I’m so pleased she has won this award. What a way to retire!”
There was even more success for Bupa care homes in The Scottish Care Awards.
Katy Jenks from Braemount nursing home was crowned Scottish Dementia Care Manager of the Year in recognition of the work that she has undertaken to change the way that care is delivered at the home.
While Gavin Scott from Pentland Hill nursing home was crowned Scottish Activities Co-ordinator of the Year for his dedication to ensuring residents can take part in stimulating and interesting activities and outings, by taking into account their personal interests.
