An initiative designed by Bupa to improve the safety of care home residents has been recognised at the Welsh Care Awards.
Bupa Care Services received a Bronze Award in the new ‘Health and Safety in Social Care’ category for their training aid which demonstrates best practice use of bed rails.
Bed rails are used extensively in the health and social care sectors to protect vulnerable people from falling out of bed. Good training of staff ensures that the rails are used in the appropriate cases reducing the risk of injury for residents. Bupa was nominated for the award for its development of a comprehensive DVD has which enables the most up-to-date training and advice to be delivered to its care home staff across Wales.
The Welsh Care Awards took place recently at City Hall, Cardiff and were hosted by the Welsh Care Forum, a not-for-profit organisation representing all independent sector providers of health and social care services for adults and children throughout Wales.
Conor Whitelaw, Bupa Care Services Regional Manager for Wales, said: “Ensuring the safe use of bed rails is an important and challenging issue and I am pleased the measures we are taking have been recognised by the Welsh Care Forum and the Health and Safety Executive. But the best thing is hearing from home managers and carers how this training aid is really delivering on the ground – managers say they can see best practice becoming normal practice.”
