Resident's wish comes true this Xmas

4 November 2009

Care home resident Carol Goodram will be sending out over 15,000 Christmas cards this year.

That’s because the 71-year-old, from Bupa’s Mill View Residential and Nursing Home in Bolton had her design chosen to be the Bupa Care Services’ official Christmas card for 2009.

Residents from all 300 Bupa care homes were eligible to enter the competition to create a festive design for the company’s Christmas card. Carol triumphed over 600 other entries and will now see her picture printed on 15,500 Christmas cards.

Louise Walsh, head of sales and marketing said: “Yet again we were overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of entries and it was even harder to choose a winner this year. Carol’s drawing stood out because of its quirky design and the smile it brought to everyone’s face as they remembered adding the finishing touches to their snowman. We felt it really captured the festive season.”

Not only will Carol’s design be seen by thousands of people this Christmas, she also received £100 worth of art and craft supplies for her home.

Carol, who has been creative all her life, not only a keen needlewoman, but a successful wedding dress-maker and wedding cake decorator, has always enjoyed taking part in weekly art classes arranged in the home. Sue Kilby, activities coordinator at Bupa’s Mill View said: “I'm delighted Carol won. She enjoys taking part in all the activities we have planned and is always first to hand out the pens and materials to encourage everyone to be creative. We are honoured one of her paintings has been selected as this year's winning Christmas card.”

Carol’s son, Martyn said: “It’s fantastic my mum has won this accolade. We are so proud of her. My dad was also a wedding photographer so he would have been delighted to see she has maintained her creative flair even in her seventies. We can’t wait to see mum’s finished card on our mantle piece this Christmas.”

Runners-up accolades were awarded to Nancy Brett from Monmouth Court Nursing Home in Ipswich and Peggy Alders, Gladys Conradi, Beryl Johnston and Eileen Taylor who entered a team design from Copper Beech House Nursing Centre, Uckfield, and both won £50 worth of art and craft supplies for their homes.
