Green Gates Nursing Home

Green Gates nestles in a pleasant, leafy part of Summertown, just five miles from Oxford town centre. This grand Victorian building has been sympathetically updated to include every modern comfort. Many original features, such as the wonderful stained glass windows in the entrance hall, have been retained.

The care we offer

A range of care is provided at Green Gates - including nursing, convalescence, palliative, respite and specialist care for those with Parkinson’s disease.

Our staff

Green Gates employs dedicated, well trained staff who provide 24-hour care and support in a professional and respectful way.

The home is managed by Margo Wilcock who has over 17 years’ experience in managing care homes. Margo is supported by a team of dedicated and professional care staff.

Food

The home's chef manager provides a wide range of balanced, nutritious dishes that use only fresh, seasonal ingredients. We offer choices that reflect the preferences and dietary requirements of our residents. Wine and sherry are served on request and on special occasions. All menus are clearly displayed on the wall and at dining tables, and carers are always on hand to offer assistance as required.

Snacks are available at any time and fresh water is delivered to residents' rooms every day. A delicious homemade cake is served daily with afternoon tea. On their birthday, each resident receives a celebratory meal and a personalised cake to make their day extra special.

Activities

We not only supply the nursing needs of our residents, we also work tirelessly to fulfil their social needs. There is a spacious activities room, which has its own kitchen and hairdressing salon. Our activity co-ordinator arranges a schedule of daily things to do. From musical afternoons, painting, drama and games to quizzes, baking and gentle gardening.

Musicians and entertainers regularly visit, and outings to Oxford are frequently arranged for those who wish to participate. Every month there is a special themed event for residents to look forward to. Friends and relatives are most welcome to join in with any of our activities.

Types of care

  • Respite
Respite care can offer a welcome break for you and/or your carer and can be provided in most care homes, offering residents a temporary stay for perhaps a week or two. It can also help to cover periods of time when a carer is unavailable. Many Bupa care homes offer respite care if there is a room vacant.
  • Palliative
This is active, compassionate care of the chronically and terminally ill, directed towards improving the quality of life. Palliative care particularly focuses on the control of pain and symptoms. These specialist approaches include the individual, the family, carers and friends, and extend to bereavement and grief.
  • Parkinson's
Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder caused by a shortage of chemical transmitter (dopamine) in the brain. People with Parkinson's disease develop stiffness, tremors and slow movement that can become worse over time. Some homes offer specialist care for people with conditions such as Parkinson's and Huntington's. We can also care for adults with learning disabilities who require a specialist supervised environment.
  • Convalescence
Homes that offer short term care for people recovering from illness or an operation.
  • Nursing
In addition to accommodation, meals and personal care, Nursing homes have qualified nurses in constant attendance. Some may provide more specialist care for specific conditions. A nursing home will generally charge higher fees than a residential home because it offers care by qualified nurses. However, the NHS now makes a contribution to nursing care fees. The minimum age for admission is normally 65. However, you should check with individual homes as some may accept younger residents.
