Northlands House Nursing and Residential Home

Northlands House is a purpose-built nursing home designed specifically to meet the needs of elderly residents. It is situated in the residential area of Shirley, in Southampton, approximately one mile from the city centre.

The care we offer
We offer several types of stay depending on the level of support required, from long term care for the elderly and those who need daily nursing, to respite care for a short period. We also provide convalescence, palliative care and care for people with Parkinson's and Huntington’s disease. We employ dedicated well trained staff to provide 24-hour care and support in a professional and respectful way.

Key features of Northlands House
Northlands House is set over three floors with full lift access and is designed to be fully wheelchair accessible. There is an attractive landscaped garden with two lovely patio areas. These provide perfect seating areas for residents to sit and enjoy the good weather, or to entertain friends and family. There is also a delightful herb garden and a sensory garden to stimulate the senses.

Bedrooms
All bedrooms are attractively decorated and furnished to a high standard and feature ensuite facilities. Some have lovely garden views. All come with smoke detectors, 24-hour call systems and a telephone point, and some have a remote controlled television. We encourage our residents to personalise their bedrooms with some favourite ornaments, pictures and small items of furniture if they wish.

Types of care

  • Respite
Respite care can offer a welcome break for you and/or your carer and can be provided in most care homes, offering residents a temporary stay for perhaps a week or two. It can also help to cover periods of time when a carer is unavailable. Many Bupa care homes offer respite care if there is a room vacant.
  • Palliative
This is active, compassionate care of the chronically and terminally ill, directed towards improving the quality of life. Palliative care particularly focuses on the control of pain and symptoms. These specialist approaches include the individual, the family, carers and friends, and extend to bereavement and grief.
  • Parkinson's
Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder caused by a shortage of chemical transmitter (dopamine) in the brain. People with Parkinson's disease develop stiffness, tremors and slow movement that can become worse over time. Some homes offer specialist care for people with conditions such as Parkinson's and Huntington's. We can also care for adults with learning disabilities who require a specialist supervised environment.
  • Convalescence
Homes that offer short term care for people recovering from illness or an operation.
  • Nursing
In addition to accommodation, meals and personal care, Nursing homes have qualified nurses in constant attendance. Some may provide more specialist care for specific conditions. A nursing home will generally charge higher fees than a residential home because it offers care by qualified nurses. However, the NHS now makes a contribution to nursing care fees. The minimum age for admission is normally 65. However, you should check with individual homes as some may accept younger residents.
