Settling in to your care home

As soon as you arrive at a Bupa care home, you’ll be made to feel welcome and comfortable. On your first day we try to help you settle in and find out more about you.

When you arrive

The first thing we do when you arrive at the care home is give you, your friends and family time to adjust to your new surroundings.

When you’re ready, we introduce you to your key carer. He or she gives you a guided tour of the home, tells you about meal times and activities and introduces you to some of the other residents and members of staff.

Your family or friends can then help you unpack or, if you prefer, we can help. Once your friends leave, your key carer will spend time getting to know you – unless, of course, you’d prefer to relax and be alone.

Our night duty staff will already know what time you like to go to bed and wake up. And your carer will show you how to use the 24-hour call system, in case you need assistance at night or any other time.

Your personal care plan

Soon after you arrive we’ll put together your Personal Care Plan, which sets out your care needs and personal preferences. Your care plan is unique to you and covers all details of your care – including medication, diet and likes and dislikes – so we can get everything just right for you.

To help us develop your personal care plan, we will ask you about things like:

  • personal routines
  • likes and dislikes
  • favourite activities, interests and hobbies
  • how you would like to be helped by the staff on a day-to-day basis
  • what you like or dislike to eat and drink
  • your sleep pattern

Your ‘map of life’

We’ll also ask you, your family and friends to help us complete your ‘map of life’* – a life story that helps us find out about your history such as where you grew up, what school you went to, what you studied at university, what job you did, where you got married, how many children and grandchildren you have. This helps us really get to know you as a person.

*We only create a ‘map of life’ for residents who stay with us for more than six weeks.

Visiting times

Our doors are open 24/7 so your family and friends can visit you at your new home whenever they want.
