Bupa has many care homes that specialise in caring for people with dementia and each home has specially trained staff to ensure that residents receive individual expert care and support, while respecting personal tastes, preferences, needs and requirements.
Dementia care is often provided within specialist houses or floors at most of our homes, whether this is the whole home or a dedicated area. This allows us to provide a safe environment adapted to the needs of residents with dementia, whilst encouraging as much independence and mental and physical stimulation as possible.
Our specialist dementia homes offer:
Our experienced and well trained specialist staff are set apart by their empathy, their commitment to provide the highest quality care and their understanding of the unique nature of dementia.
We employ registered nurses, and highly train our care assistants to provide 24-hour professional care and support. All dementia carers have specialist training and are kept informed with new developments in care practice.
We have close links with the Alzheimer’s Society, which is further strengthened by a joint commitment outlined in a shared ‘memorandum of understanding’. Its purpose is to offer joint opportunities to learn and educate, raise the bar in dementia care and take the vision of care, understanding and life enhancement forward. One of the first initiatives is the implementation of ‘Dementia Champions’ in specialist Bupa care homes.

Our person-centred care approach means that each resident is respected as an individual and treated with dignity. Each resident has a named key worker and their own Personal Care Plan.
Our carers take the time to learn each resident’s life history, to which relatives' contributions are welcomed. Understanding the reasons behind an action, and the people, places and belongings which are important to them, can help us to overcome a resident’s frustration and fear when they are unable to express what they want.
Mental and physical stimulation through enjoyable activities are important, particularly to people with dementia. Every care home has a dedicated activity co-ordinator who organises activities, such as arts and crafts, gardening, reminiscence therapy, exercise to music, and one-to-one involvement. We encourage residents to carry out small tasks throughout the day, such as helping to lay the table or watering the plants if they wish, which can help retain self-esteem and involvement in daily life.
