Parkinson's disease care
Parkinson’s disease currently affects around 120,000 people in the UK, with 10,000 new cases diagnosed every year. At Bupa, we have specialist Parkinson’s disease care homes with the facilities, equipment and highly skilled staff suitable for caring for people with Parkinson’s disease.
While each Bupa care home has its own individual style and range of facilities, all our homes give you security, independence, and the very best expert care.
At a Bupa care home you’ll find:
Carers who work with people with Parkinson’s disease receive on-the-job training from skilled home managers and, often, from the Parkinson’s disease society, Parkinson’s UK.
Our carers therefore have the training and experience to give them the understanding needed to look after residents with Parkinson’s disease. The care they provide offers vital support to help people to cope with their condition, including occupational, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy.
All our residents have Personal Care Plans, which recognise their needs and wishes as individuals. These plans document the care requirements needed to make sure that the right care is given at the right time.
For example, we give drugs at exactly the right time to suit residents, rather than our staff. -People with Parkinson’s disease need a balanced supply of medicine in their bloodstream to provide symptom control, and this varies from one person to another. This makes our care unique for most residential or nursing homes, where drug rounds tend to take place at the same time for all residents.
Residents with Parkinson’s disease also tend to have a higher calorie intake than those without, because the illness affects the rate at which food metabolises. Food also helps medicine to be absorbed from the stomach into the bloodstream more effectively. We make sure this is taken into account when planning a resident’s diet.
We know that exercise is especially important for people with Parkinson’s, so regular activities are planned to help ease muscle and joint stiffness.
Our person-centred care approach means that each resident is respected as an individual and treated with the dignity they deserve.

Before choosing a care home it is important to visit the home, meet the staff and residents and ask lots of questions.
