Bupa Select
Community-rated private medical insurance
Bupa Select is a flexible PMI solution for business.
It has a comprehensive core of health cover benefits and a range of options that lets you adjust your cover to match your requirements.
This means that you can design a solution to suit each client’s needs and provide them with suitable cover for employees at every level of their organisation.
From increasing the amount of treatment available and providing access to a wider choice of hospitals to optical, dental and prescription cover, Bupa Select’s Benefit Enhancement options let clients add extra cover to the core essentials.
The Cost Containment options allow you to increase the excess your clients pay on certain benefits, reduce certain levels of cover and even exclude some elements in order to keep costs within their budget - without sacrificing the essential elements of their cover. Plus, the increased flexibility in pricing and the ability to adjust prices down will bring Bupa PMI within range of a greater number of businesses and help you overcome any cost objections.
The core benefits provide the basis for clients’ health cover package. Bupa Select’s core benefits alone provide extensive cover for a wide range of in- and out-patient treatments.
Full medical underwriting (FMU)
New companies joining Bupa will be underwritten at point of joining. We will exclude for any pre-existing conditions prior to joining Bupa.
No further underwriting (NFU)
In certain circumstances we may offer 'no further underwriting' terms for a whole group move from a competitor-held PMI scheme. Under such circumstances, we will not apply any further special conditions or exclusions, but will move the existing exclusions from their current insurer. A group will be accepted with no further underwriting if our criteria determines that the group represents an acceptable risk.
Medical history disregarded (MHD)
For group with 20 registrations or more you can opt for MHD and we will cover you without asking for your medical history. Waiting periods would still apply.
Moratorium
Bupa will not underwrite at point of joining, so you will not be required to complete a medical questionnaire before you arrange cover. This will be on the understanding that you will not be immediately covered for any medical conditions that existed in the five years before you join. However, we may include cover for these conditions if, two continuous years (moratorium period) after the start of your policy, if you have experienced no symptoms and received no treatment, medication, tests or advice from your GP or a specialist for the condition.
These options allow you to reduce costs and keep Bupa Select’s price within clients’ budgets without them sacrificing the essential elements of their cover. You can increase the excess your clients pay on certain benefits, reduce certain levels of cover and even exclude some elements completely.
(Can be chosen according to tier of staff)

(Only available when chosen at group level)
When an employee needs medical treatment, if it can be supplied within six weeks of the recommended treatment date at an NHS site, that’s where the treatment takes place. If it can’t be supplied within six weeks by the local NHS hospital, the member is given access to Bupa private healthcare. Either way, eligible treatment will take place within six weeks.
What are the benefits of the Six Week scheme?
These options allow you to increase the level of your clients’ cover. From increasing the amount of out-patient benefit available and providing access to a wider choice of hospitals to optical, dental and prescription cover, Bupa Select’s flexible format lets you add extra cover to the core essentials.
No monetary limit on how much out-patient benefit can be used for complementary medicine on these options.
