Frequently asked questions
Can I leave the scheme at any time?
You can cancel your membership of the scheme at any time by writing to Philip Williams and Company.
What happens when I leave the force?
If you retire, you may remain in the scheme. If you leave the Police, you will no longer be eligible to be in the scheme.
If I lapse my cover at renewal can I re-join later?
Any member leaving the scheme will only be able to re-join, as long as they are still eligible, on a medically underwritten basis (i.e. all previous medical conditions may be excluded from future claims).
At what age does cover for my dependants cease?
If you have dependant children, they can remain on your policy until the age of 24 at which point they are entitled to their own policy and will be charged at the full rate according to their age.
If my personal circumstances change what will I need to do?
You are responsible for notifying Philip Williams and Company and Bupa in writing of any change in your circumstances including change of address. If you do not inform us of a change in your dependant family then they may not be covered and therefore unable to claim. If you have a new born baby, you can add that baby to your cover without underwriting so long as it is within 12 weeks of the date of birth. Please remember that the family cover will only be provided to the members that you have named to Bupa.
Is there an excess charge?
Yes. An annual excess of £100 per person is payable under the scheme. The savings produced by the introduction of an excess has allowed for cancer treatments to be covered under this scheme, which were not previously covered under the Trust scheme.
How do I make a claim?
You should call Bupa on 0845 605 0253** before you see a consultant or therapist. Bupa will then take you through a pre-authorisation process, it is essential to keep Bupa informed throughout your treatment. There are usually no forms to complete.
**Lines are open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday
