Blisters

What is it?

A blister is a small pocket of fluid in the upper layers of your skin. Runners often get them on their feet.

Causes

Most blisters are caused by friction and excess moisture. Poorly fitting shoes or socks are often to blame as they rub against your skin.

Treatment

At the first sign of a blister, you should apply a plaster or specialist blister plaster over the area. This may stop the blister from fully forming.

Most blisters will heal naturally and do not require any treatment.

Do

  • Ensure that your shoes fit correctly and wear in new shoes gently.
  • Wear good quality running socks that keep your feet dry while running.
  • Protect potential blister areas by applying a plaster or blister pad.
  • Put petroleum jelly on areas of your feet that rub.

Don't

  • Burst blisters filled with blood.
