About our service
With our private doctor service, time is on your side at last. Available to see you sooner rather than later, your private doctor will have more time to look at your health in a broader context and develop a clearer picture of your needs and concerns. We offer:
- Appointments of 15 minutes or longer
- Prescriptions
- Repeat prescriptions
- Private consultants referrals
- Routine appointments or occasional advice
Our doctors
Great care is taken in selecting our doctors to ensure that, as well as having the highest levels of clinical expertise and the empathetic qualities you'd expect, they are committed to providing the highest standards in general practice consultation.
Both male and female doctors make up our team of experienced general practitioners. They, in turn, are supported by some of the UK's leading medical specialists.
Other services
We offer a range of nurse and doctor-delivered services at most of our centres. These include:
- blood tests
- flu vaccinations
- health assessments
- travel advice and vaccinations
- well woman services including contraceptive advice
- physiotherapy, and sports and orthopaedic medicine
Appointments
When you call, we'll ask you how much time you think you need to spend with the doctor. A 15 minute appointment is usually sufficient for minor problems. If, despite booking a short appointment more time is required, we will endeavour to make this available to you. But there will be a charge for extra time. We aim to offer you an appointment within one working day for a routine appointment and will try to accommodate urgent requests on the same day.
Prescriptions
Our doctors will give you private prescriptions rather than NHS prescriptions, which means that you pay for the cost of the drugs and a chemist's dispensing fee. For many commonly used drugs, the cost is unlikely to exceed the NHS prescription charge significantly. We will advise you if the cost is likely to be high and discuss your options.
Repeat prescriptions
We offer a repeat prescription service to our regular clients. IF you have seen one of our private doctors before and were prescribed medication, you may be able to request a further supply without always needing another appointment. Repeat prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion and your request must be received in writing in order to meet audit requirements. There is a small fee for repeat prescriptions, payable on receipt of the prescription.
Private consultant referrals
We have extensive experience in accessing private health care and hold a large database of consultants who have provided care for our patients. If you need specialist attention, your private doctor will recommend the right consultant for your condition. Please remember to check that you are either insured for any referral or that you have alternative arrangements in place to meet the costs.
We do not normally have access to NHS clinics with the exception of accident and emergency, sexual health and family planning clinics.
Registrations and confidentiality
The first time that you contact us, we will ask you to provide some personal details and open a confidential medical file for all your records. These are subject to the same strict rules of confidentiality that you would expect of any medical records. No information will be passed to any third party without your consent.
Will seeing a private GP affect my relationship with my NHS GP?
We aim to offer a level of care that is right for you and your circumstance. You may choose to use the BUPA Wellness service for all your routine doctor requirements or just occasionally for advice - it is entirely up to you. However, we strongly advise that you remain on the list with an NHS GP, close to your home, to ensure assistance in the event of a medical emergency.
Opening hours
Our opening hours vary by centre, but appointment are usually available on weekdays from 8.30am to 5.15pm. Evening consultations may also be available, please ask for details. We do not offer a 24 hour on call service
Prices
Prices start at £59 for a 15 minute appointment with a BUPA doctor. Initial appointments of 30 minutes may be required at some centres.
