Body mass index (BMI) calculation
What it measures
- The relationship between height and weight
- Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared
- Normal range: 20-25 (higher is fatter)
Health implications
- Excess weight is related to an increased risk of heart disease, raised blood pressure, raised blood fats, stroke, diabetes and even some cancers
- It has an immediate impact on functional fitness
NB Body Mass Index assumes excess weight is excess fat - so should be interpreted with caution, especially with those who are heavy due to high muscle mass e.g. rugby players.
