Save the Sparrow

Residents of Bupa care homes are calling on local communities to help reverse the decline in the UK house sparrow population by joining them in creating sparrow-friendly gardens.

Teaming up with the RSPB, Bupa has developed an action plan to boost sparrow numbers, helping them keep their chicks alive this summer and provide homes for future years.

The plans are part of Bupa’s Wildlife Week (7 – 13 May), a week of special activities designed to create wildlife havens in care home grounds and gardens, to attract species that are currently in decline in Britain. If you can lend a hand in helping our residents during Wildlife Week, please call 0845 600 4622 or email wildlifeweek@bupa.com and we will contact a local home on your behalf.

Water, water, water

Sparrows and other birds will come to drink from water, so make you’re your water baths are regularly topped up.

Make your own bird bath

Birds like bathing in shallow water and you can make the perfect bath for them using an upturned bin lid.

What you'll need:

  • Bin lid
  • Pebbles
  • Water
  • Terracotta flowerpot (optional)

How to make it:

  • Fill the lid with a layer of pebbles so that it's weighted down.
  • Set the lid on top of a stump in your garden or on top of a terracotta flowerpot.
  • Fill the lid with water and hey presto, your own bird bath!

For advice on where to put your bird bath, visit the RSPB website.
