Cervical screening
At Bupa, we offer quick and convenient cervical screening tests (a HPV/smear test) with a private GP.
Attending your routine cervical screening test is an important way to keep track of your cervix’s health. Through screening tests, we’re able to check for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) – if it’s found, we’ll check for any abnormal cells that could lead to cervical cancer. The earlier these cells are found, the less chance you have of developing cancer.
If the test results show anything suspicious, we can refer you to a self pay private specialist or signpost to an NHS GP so you can get any follow-up tests and treatment you need.

What happens during a cervical smear test?
During your test, one of our healthcare professionals will take a sample of cells from the neck of your womb. Although it may feel uncomfortable, the procedure itself doesn’t take long.
Your sample will then be sent to a lab and tested for the presence of HPV and, if required, further checks for abnormal cells that could lead to cervical cancer.
If your screening result shows any abnormal cells, we can put you in touch with a private or NHS doctor for follow-up treatment.
What is human papilloma virus (HPV)?
HPV - the human papilloma virus - is a common infection that affects most women during their lifetime. In many cases, your body naturally fights off the infection, but sometimes the virus can cause abnormal cells to develop in the cervix. The only way to catch these cells at a stage before they may develop into cancer is by having a cervical screening test.
