Treatment for knee ligament injuries

Medicines and over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol can help treat mild to moderate pain or swelling, and there are a number of techniques you can use to help your injury, such as applying ice and compression. Physiotherapy can help treat severe or complex injuries. A physiotherapist can develop a programme of exercises to gradually strengthen your knee and stretch your muscles.

Surgery is usually undertaken for the following types of injury:

  • a tear to your anterior cruciate ligament - particularly if you do a lot of sport or have also torn the meniscus or your medial collateral ligament.
  • if your knee remains painful or locks after an injury to your meniscus.

To repair your knee ligaments you may have open surgery or a type of keyhole surgery called knee arthroscopy, depending on your injury.

Knee ligament surgery with Bupa

Treatment for your knee injury depends on the type of ligament damage you have. Whilst physiotherapy can help with some ligament damage, ligament surgery may be needed to help relieve pain, reduce swelling and can help improve your quality of life.

Our team can discuss all options available to you, so you can feel comfortable that you’re choosing the right option for your condition.

Knee ligament injuries are common, especially during sport. If your ligaments require surgery to repair them, the cruciate ligament surgery usually only involves a one night stay.

Your consultant will invite you back for a follow-up appointment and out-patient physiotherapy can be arranged to help restore your knee to full mobility as part of your aftercare treatment.
