The great indoors

23 November 2015

Indoor activities to keep you motivated this winter.

With the days getting colder and darker, the idea of going out for a jog first thing or playing sports in the park after work can be daunting. But don't let winter put a freeze on your healthy lifestyle. Here are a few indoor activities1 to inspire you…

  • Swimming gives your whole body a workout but doesn't stress your joints. Providing you put in enough effort to increase your heart rate, swimming can help you improve your fitness levels.

  • Aerobics involves exercise routines set to music. Classes are a good way to meet new people or spend enjoyable time with colleagues outside of work. Regular aerobic exercise (anything that uses oxygen, raises your heart rate and makes you slightly breathless) is important for keeping your heart healthy, so try to keep it going over the winter.

  • Strength (resistance) exercise could help you tone up and improve your strength, posture and balance. It involves moving your muscles against resistance such as free weights or a weight-lifting machine. Are you a member of a gym? If so, be sure to get to know all the equipment that's available – you might find something new that you like.

  • Yoga, Pilates and tai chi all involve exercises that increase strength and flexibility, and are great for helping you to relax after a tough day at work. They will also help improve your circulation, balance and posture – ideal if you spend a good deal of your time sitting down in an office.

So with all this in mind, are there any gyms or leisure centres local to your place of work? Or a class you could go to on your way home from work? Incorporating it into your routine could help your resolve last through the winter.
