Staff at a local Gillingham care home, Bupa The Mellowes, have recently thrown a Sir Elton John themed party in celebration of resident and Elton mega-fan, Lou Welch, 92.

The initiative comes as part of Bupa’s #NeverTooLate campaign, which encourages residents to live life to the full and inspire residents to experience new things.

After finding out Lou’s fondness for the star, Activities Co-ordinator, Lynn Francis organised a themed party where residents celebrated with silly glasses and funky clothing – Elton John style! Residents enjoyed Elton themed activities including song bingo.

Lynn pulled out all the stops, also contacting Sir Elton John’s team and in response she received a signed photograph of Elton which was given to Lou as part of her birthday gift.

Lynn said: “It was such a brilliant party and the residents had so much fun! It was great to see how made up Lou was and the signed photograph from Elton was the perfect cherry on top of a fantastic day.”

General Manager, Maureen Vickery, said: “What a successful day it was. The #NeverTooLate campaign is a great initiative to keep inspiring residents to experience new things and revisit some old ones.”

The Mellowes is a purpose-built care home and welcomes anyone in need of nursing or residential care. Residents are offered a full programme of regular and seasonal activities, as well as 24-hour access to highly trained medical and care staff.
