Jeff graduated with distinction from the University of Edinburgh in 1991. He went on to achieve a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Dundee in 1997. He has been awarded Fellowships in Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and the Royal College of Surgeons Glasgow in 2000, 2005 and 2007 respectively.
Jeff is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a facial plastic surgeon. His areas of interest lie in facial deformity and trauma, the surgical management of skin cancers, oral surgery, and facial aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. In his private practice, this includes rhitidectomy (face lifts), facial rejuvenation, and the use of fillers and botulinum toxins.
Jeff is a member of a variety of organisations including the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgeons.
He is widely published and has presented at many international meetings. He is an honorary senior lecturer at Glasgow University and has also been involved in the development and facilitation of many professional training courses.
Mr Downie is one of the directors for the charity Medics Against Violence, dedicated to the reduction of interpersonal violence in Scotland. As a result, he is a regular speaker in schools and prisons and on BBC Radio Scotland.
