Snoring solutions and mouth guards

We’re all guilty of snoring at some point and although it isn’t harmful, it may be a sign that you have a serious condition called obstructive sleep apnoea. That’s when we can help.

Snoring solutions

There are a number of treatments you can try to tackle your snoring, which we we’ll discuss with you at your initial appointment.

Typically a snoring appliance can be fitted. This is a custom-made mouthpiece that can prevent the lower jaw from dropping back, therefore preventing the closure of your airways when you sleep.

We may also recommend that you use nasal strips (plasters) to help snoring. These pull your nostrils apart to help stop them narrowing when you sleep.

Mouth guards and mouth splints

If you’ve ever woken up with a sore jaw, earache or suffer from neck pain and headaches, you may be suffering from teeth grinding. Excessive tooth grinding can also cause the teeth to be worn and chipped.

One of our dentists can check the way you bite to see if you’re grinding your teeth. We may recommend wearing a night guard or a mouth splint during the night. These are designed to keep your upper and lower teeth apart to prevent premature tooth wear and reduce the tension in the jaw muscles. Sometimes the biting surfaces of the teeth may also be smoothed or changed to balance the bite.

Sports guards

In many contact sports such as football, boxing, rugby and hockey, injury can be prevented through the use of fitted mouth guards.

If you are looking for protection, our dentists can recommend a number of custom-made mouthpieces and mouth guards for sport.
