What's your body mass index image

Whatever your stage of life and however healthy you may be, it’s important to be aware of your own body and know the signs that could spell trouble.

This month we’re looking at how to make sure you’re familiar with your own body and some simple, but important changes to look out for.

One of the first and easiest things you can do is be aware of how much you weigh and whether it’s a healthy weight. Why not try our BMI calculator now to find out.

Watch out for bowel changes...

Everyone’s bowel patterns are different, but it’s important to be aware of what’s normal for you, and if there’s been a change.

Here are some key warning signs to look out for. Bowel symptoms can be caused by many things, but if you have any of these symptoms, it’s worth getting checked out by a doctor.

Keep an eye on your skin...

Changes in your skin could be one of any number of things, from minor damage or injury, to a skin condition or cancer. Every now and then, it’s worth checking over your skin to look out for new lumps or abnormal areas of skin.

If you have moles, it’s especially important to keep an eye on these and be aware of any changes in how they look. Bupa dermatologist Dr Stephanie Munn explains more here:

Be breast aware...

Being breast aware just means getting into the habit of regularly feeling and looking at your breasts, so you become familiar with what’s normal for you. Changes to your breasts can be caused by many things, but it can be a sign of breast cancer.

Our guide can help you with what changes to look out for – and when it’s important to see a doctor.

Testicular awareness...

How your testicles look and feel may not be something you’ve given much thought to.

But getting into the habit of regularly checking your testicles can mean you spot any changes early. Testicular cancer has a very good chance of being cured if caught early.
