How to get rid of acne
If you have acne and are concerned about it, one of our expert dermatologists will be able to examine your skin and recommend the best course of treatment for you.
Treatments for acne include:
Creams and lotions
There are a number of commonly used creams or lotions your dermatologist may prescribe. These include antibacterial medicines and lotions which can help to treat blackheads.
If your acne is severe, your dermatologist may prescribe an antibiotic such as tetracycline, erythromycin or trimethoprim. Most people find this treatment improves their acne within six months. In some cases if there is no improvement your dermatologist may prescribe a Vitamin A derived tablet such as Isotretinoin.
Hormonal acne treatment
Women with acne may find that oral contraceptive pills help to control their testosterone levels. As higher amounts of testosterone can lead to an increase in sebum, controlling the hormone with contraceptive pills can help to clear up your skin, by making it less oily.
In more severe acne cases, women may be able to use a medicine called co-cyprindiol to control their testosterone levels – this medicine also works as a contraceptive. As hormone-based acne treatments can increase your chances of developing blood clots, our doctors can help you to decide if this treatment is right for you.
Adult acne treatment
Although acne is most like to affect you if you’re a teenager or young adult, some people can suffer with it up until their forties. Regardless of your age, our doctors and dermatologists can help to find the right treatment for you, whether that be cream, lotion or medication.
Laser treatment for acne
Currently, light or laser therapy is being looked into as another form of potential treatment for acne. As this kind of treatment is still being developed, it’s not yet known how well it works. If you’ve any questions about this form of treatment, speak to one of our expert dermatologists.
