Causes and symptoms of posterior cruciate ligament injury

You may not have felt anything when you first injured your posterior cruciate ligament. However, you may get some pain behind your knee, especially when you kneel. You may also have some mild swelling and a bruise on your knee. If your injury happened a while ago, you may begin to get more generalised knee pain, including at the front of your knee. It may be difficult to stand properly on the affected leg, or put your full weight on it.

Your posterior cruciate ligament may have been injured because of:

  • a blow to the front of your knee when it’s bent
  • falling on a bent knee
  • a twisting movement (often injured as well as the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee)
  • your knees hitting the dashboard in a car accident – posterior cruciate ligament damage is sometimes called the ‘dashboard injury’ as this is often how it occurs
