What happens during a skin biopsy?

Your doctor will take a small sample of your skin using one of the following techniques.

  • Shave biopsy - only the top layer of your skin will be removed.
  • Punch biopsy - a deeper, circular sample of your skin will be removed.
  • Incisional biopsy - a scalpel will be used to remove a larger sample of skin.
  • Excisional biopsy- the whole area of concern will be removed.

Stitches will be used to close your wound if you have an incisional or excisional biopsy. Your skin sample will will be sent to a laboratory so the cells can be examined.
