Skin conditions can cause a great deal of irritation and pain, or lead to bigger problems down the line. A skin biopsy can help diagnose your skin complaint or completely remove the affected area of skin.

Doctor and stethoscope

What happens during a skin biopsy?

Your doctor will take a small sample of your skin using one of the following techniques.

  • Shave biopsy - only the top layer of your skin will be removed.
  • Punch biopsy - a deeper, circular sample of your skin will be removed.
  • Incisional biopsy - a scalpel will be used to remove a larger sample of skin.
  • Excisional biopsy- the whole area of concern will be removed.

Stitches will be used to close your wound if you have an incisional or excisional biopsy. Your skin sample will will be sent to a laboratory so the cells can be examined.

Different types of skin biopsy procedure

Whatever type of skin biopsy exam you need, we have it covered with our variety of specialists, procedures and prices.

Your skin biopsy will usually be done in a hospital by a dermatologist. You'll be given an injection of local anaesthetic before your biopsy.

To help put your mind at rest, all of our skin biopsy patients receive an aftercare service. This includes a follow-up appointment with a consultant, as well as readmission into hospital within 30 days of the initial procedure, should it be needed.

In the unlikely event of any complications arising from your procedure, the cost of additional treatment required may also be covered subject to the terms and conditions of the package that you choose.
