What happens during a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is usually performed under a local anaesthetic to ensure you don't feel any pain.

Your doctor will feel for your vas deferens (the muscular tubes that transport sperm). They may use a special forcep-like instrument to create a small opening in the skin above the vas deferens (known as the no-scalpel technique). Alternatively, they may make one or two cuts (1 to 2cm long) in your scrotum.

Your doctor will pull out a section of each vas deferens and cut each tube. The ends of the tubes will be closed off, either by tying them or by heating the tissues so that the tubes seal shut. The tubes will then be put back into your scrotum and the opening will be closed using dissolvable stitches or adhesive strips.

The entire procedure generally takes around 10 to 15 minutes.
