Bupa scoops sustainability award

Award win recognises the healthcare company’s commitment to climate and environment
Last night, Bupa won the ‘best use of solar in a CSR project’ award in the 2015 Solar Power Portal awards, for developments completed through its global Energy Saver Fund (ESF). Bupa beat strong competition from projects led by Waitrose, Random Wood Business Park and Port of Milford Haven.

Bupa created the £50m global ESF in 2014, aiming to implement over 900 renewable and low carbon projects across Bupa’s sites worldwide. The ESF projects will save around 21kTCO2, and approximately £5m a year on energy bills.

By the end of 2015, over three hundred of the ESF projects will have been completed all over the UK. Bupa monitors and analyses energy usage in 99% of their care home portfolio every 30 minutes. The data has enabled Bupa to integrate PV systems to work alongside combined heat and power units. As a result, they have already seen some care homes operate completely 'off grid' electrically when the sun is out, and consistently deliver green energy when it is needed.

Rupert Gowrley, Director of Government Affairs and Sustainability, Bupa UK comments: “So much hard work has gone Bupa’s Energy Saver Fund, and it’s great to see our achievements recognised in this way. Our end goal is to roll out Solar PV and other green technologies across our entire care home portfolio - using these new innovations means that we aren’t only helping the environment but ultimately, also helping to deliver business savings.

“We’ve had strong feedback from our people who work in the homes where changes have already been made. They are really pleased to be doing their bit and to be using natural resources to power everyday things like LED corridor lighting. We are extremely proud to have won this award.”

Run by Solar Business Focus UK, the awards cover all areas of the solar industry. They recognise and celebrate good practice, professionalism, quality, safety and innovation, with the aim of being a marker of the brightest and best that UK solar has to offer.

This year, Bupa has also won the Australian Business Award winner for Sustainability, was recognised as the ABA100 Winner in The Australian Business Awards (ABA) 2015 for Sustainability for its work in carbon reduction and was awarded the Business Green Leaders Award in July.
