DiverCity – the group of Bupa employees tackling diversity head on

A growing number of Bupa employees have formed a group to raise awareness and actively increase people’s understanding of diversity. They focus on different topics ranging from LGBT to disability.

With Bupa CEO David Hynam being recognised as one of the top 10 Global leaders in the LGBT + Executives List by the Financial Times, it highlights Bupa as one of the leading companies around the world for diversity and inclusion.

So we wanted to learn more about what DiverCity does and some of its achievements.

What is DiverCity?

DiverCity is a movement created in our Coventry office by Angela Kay. It was set up to raise awareness and build networks across Bupa and the wider business community. It creates an environment that allows our people to bring the best of themselves to work every day.

How was the group formed?

Angela, who started the group, has previously worked in a Mental Health organisation supporting people with brain injuries. This is when she became very passionate about educating people on misconceptions about disability, which is where the idea for DiverCity came from. It was later broadened to cover equality and inclusion.

The Coventry office has diverse team members, many from different cultures, faiths, orientations and backgrounds. So Angela started DiverCity there and soon team members joined to help spread the positive messages.

They have plans to expand this group further by creating hubs in Coventry, Salford, Staines, Brighton and London Bupa offices. Watch this space!

DiverCity’s achievements so far

One of the biggest achievements for DiverCity since launching is being entered into an LGBT pride event in Birmingham for the first time, helping to show Bupa’s support for the LGBT community. The DiverCity team have been working hard to continue to develop this relationship and have some exciting plans coming up in 2018, including working with Coventry Pride.

Angela was also named one of the Top 10 Diversity Champions in the UK in the Annual LGBT Awards in her first year of entering. As the only entry from a Healthcare or Insurance business it was another great achievement for DiverCity.

Plans for 2018

There are big plans set for DiverCity in 2018; the group will be participating in a number of LGBT events all over the UK as well as continuing to work with the Milton Keynes RoundabOUT network. They’ll be planning events for colleagues and continuing to spread the love in across the Bupa offices while getting more people on board through communicating with the business. And hopefully winning some more awards!
