It runs in the family - Bupa Carers celebrate Mother's Day

24 March 2017

This Mother's Day, Bupa is celebrating all the families that work together to support care home residents across the country. For some of us, working with your mum might not be an obvious choice, but for many of these duos, things are a little different.

The caring industry has a proud tradition of family members working together. Sons and daughters are influenced and inspired by their parents’ stories, experiences and the rewarding aspects of a career in caring. Charlotte was inspired by her mum to join the caring profession, and started working in Ashley Park when she left school two years ago.

At Bupa’s Ashley Park care home in Surrey, Sarah Richardson, 43 years old, is a carer and together with her daughter Charlotte Chatfield, 18 years, they offer around the clock support for residents. The pair has been working together for three years and, between them, they share more than 21 years of experience.

Charlotte Chatfield, a Bupa carer said: “My mum was definitely the main reason why I went into caring. She’s a huge inspiration to me! She’s so good at looking after everyone, and I really appreciate that I can spend so much time with her.

“Mum will be working this Sunday as she wants to be there for our residents on important days like these. But I’ll definitely be treating her to a Mother’s Day dinner later in the evening.”

Sarah adds: “Working together with my daughter is lovely – I’m so lucky to see her every day. Of course I’m proud of her, but I have to say I feel particularly proud when residents and their relatives feedback on the great work Charlotte does.”

Simon Lloyd, Home Manager of Bupa’s Ashley Park said: “Having family members who work together in the home creates a very special atmosphere and our residents really enjoy having them around. It can remind them of the importance of family occasions and help them reminisce of Mother’s days spent with their own families. Mother’s Day is a big event in our home – we’ll be celebrating with a terrific lunch and party. It’s going to be a really special day.”
