‘New Year, new you’: More than half of Brits try but fail at New Year resolutions

  • Over half of people who made a New Year resolution last year say they failed to keep it.
  • The most common reasons for giving up or not achieving a New Year resolution were a lack of commitment and a loss of motivation.
  • Research comes as Bupa UK launches brand new range of health assessments to help people make and stick to long-term health goals.

Brits are still making New Year resolutions but are struggling more than ever to keep them, new research from Bupa has found.

In a study of more than 2,000 people, over half of those who made a New Year resolution last year say they failed to keep it (56%), mainly due to a lack of commitment or loss of motivation. Exercise and losing weight are the biggest New Year goals people have for their health and wellbeing (38%) followed by healthy eating (30%).

The research comes as Bupa UK prepares to launch a new range of health assessments in January,
designed specifically to help people understand and improve their health and wellbeing. Customers receive ongoing coaching during and beyond the assessment to help map out a clear route to a healthier lifestyle, as well as digital support to stay motivated to reach goals.

“Behavioural science can teach us how to stay motivated while pursuing our goals, maximise our willpower, develop healthy habits that will really stick, and design physical environments that will make us healthier, happier and on track to achieving our ambitions.”

1. Exercising more (38%)
2. Losing weight (38%)
3. Eating more healthily (30%)

The ways people think would best help them keep their New Year solutions are:
1. Keeping it with someone else (27%)
2. Having a step-by-step guide (17%)
