S is for Smile

Man smiling by the water

I have a genetic condition which means a lot of my second or adult teeth are missing, so I have bridges to fill some of the gaps. However, when they were first done, they weren’t done very well and they made my smile look odd.

Not only that, my natural teeth started to look quite brown and stained, while the false teeth which had been wired into the bridges weren’t aligned correctly. It made me reluctant to show my teeth in photographs and, to be completely honest, I became a bit ashamed of my smile. Last year we’d just come back from Vietnam. My wife and I were looking through our holiday pictures and she commented on the fact that I wouldn’t show my teeth. That’s when I decided to fix the issue.

I used Bupa’s pay as you go service and booked in to see a specialist at Bupa’s Bank Centre. The booking process was very easy; I got an appointment for a week later which suited me and my busy work schedule.

As soon as I opened my mouth, the dentist, Dr Steve Preddy could see immediately what was wrong with my bridges. They’d been put in at an incorrect angle. We talked through the different options and costs, then also talked through deeper details such as the number of appointments I’d need depending on the different options, and the different stages for each.

The team replaced one of my bridges and built my teeth up. The new ones were much straighter so the impact on my smile was immediate.

Being so conscious about my teeth had knocked my confidence, but now, I don’t even need to think about it anymore! I really enjoy the way they look now – it means I’m free to just get on with life.
