Resident has a hoot at 80th birthday party

15 February 2024

Oxford care home resident, Roland Butler, has celebrated his 80th birthday at Green Gates Bupa Care Home, with a surprise visit from Al’s Owls.

Roland turned 80-years-old on 2nd February, and to help him celebrate, carers at Green Gates organised a party with a special twist. Knowing he is a huge animal lover, having grown up with dogs, plus a passion for fishing and birdwatching, his carers arranged for local animal experience providers, Al’s Owls, to bring three owls along to the party.

Al’s Owls is a family run business that fosters and rehabilitates owls.

Commenting on his 80th birthday, Roland said: “I’ve had a brilliant birthday, surrounded by people I love. I feel very lucky. I was thrilled to hold the owls; it was certainly a unique experience, and they are beautiful creatures that I have always admired. Thank you very much to my carers and family for making this a birthday to remember.”

Roland has lived in Oxford all his life. He went to St Margaret’s School and his favourite subject was history. After leaving school at 16, he went to work at Morris Motors as a panel beater.

Roland is a proud father of four and grandfather. His two daughters, Tracey and Collen, visit Roland daily and also joined in with the feather-filled festivities.

Today, Roland enjoys nothing more than sitting in the garden at Green Gates Bupa Care Home continuing his love for watching animals and nature.

Sharon Lamb, Home Manager at Green Gates, commented: “We were delighted to make Roland so happy on his birthday, he had the biggest smile on his face during the owl visit. It’s really important that we make each individual feel loved and valued at Green Gates; that is why we do our best to help carry people’s hobbies and passions into retirement and celebrate birthdays in a way we know they will love.”
