  • If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change, you will be told of this in advance by at least 14 working days, as agreed.
  • If an error is made by Bupa or your Bank or Building Society you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.
  • You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your Bank or Building Society. Please also send a copy of your letter to us.

Gender as a factor in the assessment of insurance risks Hide

The Sex Discrimination (Amendment of Legislation) Regulations 2008 amend the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and permit differences in insurance premiums and benefits between men and women in certain circumstances.

In particular, the amendments to the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 allow insurance companies to charge different premiums for men and women as long as that data relevant to the use of gender as an actuarial factor is compiled, published and regularly updated in accordance with guidance issued by the Treasury. The latest guidance was published on 7 March 2008 and applies to insurance contracts which began on, or after, 6 April 2008. This guidance can be accessed on the HM Treasury website:

Data relating to the following types of insurance can be found by visiting the Continuous Mortality Investigation (CMI) website listed below.


Although this data is relevant to the use of gender as an actuarial factor, it is not possible to draw conclusions from the information in these tables about our premium or annuity rates because:

  • the data represents an industry average whereas we may reflect our own data in our pricing
  • Bupa will take account of other factors in calculating premium rates, such as expenses and investment returns, which will not vary by gender
  • Bupa will also take account of specific features of the policies offered, such as guarantee periods and escalation.

HM Treasury’s guidance states: “This data must demonstrate the case for differing treatment based on gender, but it is highly unlikely to present a direct correlation with the premiums charged or the benefits obtained in individual cases.”

It’s important to note that premiums will depend on differentials by age throughout the term of the policy, not just a person’s age at the start of it. If you would like more details on how the premium for a particular policy reflects gender differentials in the underlying data, please contact us.

This data is supplied by the Continuous Mortality Investigation, which carries out research into mortality and morbidity experience on behalf of the UK actuarial profession. Traditionally this has covered people protected by long-term insurance policies issued by life insurance companies in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

These investigations cover all the main types of life assurance, annuitant, pensioner, critical illness and income protection insurance contracts offered by the market. The base data is supplied by life insurance companies covering a large proportion of the market.
