If you’re feeling an urgent or frequent need to pee, or you’re experiencing bladder leaks, your doctor might ask you to keep a bladder diary. A bladder diary is a simple chart. You’ll need to include things like how often you pee, how much fluid you drink, and if you’ve had any leaks. In this article I look at why keeping a bladder diary is useful, and include a downloadable bladder diary below that you can complete at home.

Why have I been asked to keep a bladder diary?

If your doctor has asked you to keep a bladder diary, it’s usually because you’ve been experiencing symptoms such as:

  • leaking pee (urine)
  • feeling the need to pee very urgently
  • needing to pee frequently during the day or at night

You’ll usually be asked to keep a three-day bladder diary as this can help your doctor notice any patterns in your symptoms.

What does a bladder diary show?

A bladder diary is usually a table or diary that you fill in at home. It’s useful for your doctor because once completed it contains lots of information. It can help provide clues as to whether a medical condition is causing your symptoms. In your bladder diary, you should include information on:

  • how much pee (urine) you’re producing (you can measure it using a jug)
  • how often you’re peeing and at what times of day
  • the times of day you’re drinking fluid
  • how much you’re drinking and the type of drink (water, tea, coffee etc)
  • how urgently you feel the need to pee each time you go to the toilet
  • whether you’ve had any leaks, and if so, how many
  • what you were doing when you experienced a leak (walking to the bathroom, for example)

It’s also useful to include:

  • what time you woke up and went to sleep each day
  • if you wore any pads, and if so, how many
  • whether you needed to change your clothes due to leaks

What are the benefits of a bladder diary?

The main benefit of keeping a bladder diary is that it can help to show patterns in your symptoms. For example, whether you’re doing a particular activity when you experience leaks. Or, whether you experience more leaks at a certain time of day, or after drinking a particular type of drink. This can be useful because it can help your doctor advise how you can best manage your symptoms. And, it can help to identify whether you might need further tests or investigations.
