Symptom Checker

Explore how this feature works, including how it offers relevant recommendations on what to do next.

How does Symptom Checker work?

Symptom Checker is a chat-based informational service that uses state of the art technology which models the probabilistic relationship between risk factors, diseases and symptoms based on the answers that you provide.

At the end of the assessment, you will be provided with some information about the location and timescale in which your symptoms might need to be treated, and may also be given some information about possible conditions based on the information you entered. Symptom Checker will try to direct you to the right information, but it is not a replacement for seeing a doctor or other healthcare professional if you're unwell. You should not take or stop taking any action (such as taking medicines) based on information from the service.

How do I start to check my symptoms?

Sign-in to the Bupa Blua Health app, click on 'Check symptoms' and follow the instructions on the screen, which will take you through your symptom assessment.

Does Symptom Checker diagnose?

Based on the information that you enter, Symptom Checker provides you with healthcare information to help you to decide where to get the most appropriate care based on the symptoms you enter, but it does not provide medical advice, diagnosis and/or treatment – this usually requires full assessment by a doctor or other registered healthcare professional.

The service does not diagnose your own health condition or make treatment recommendations for you. Symptom Checker is not a substitute for a doctor or other healthcare professional. You should not take or stop taking any action (such as taking medicines) based on information from our information services.

What does Symptom Checker cover/is it suitable for me?

Symptom Checker covers over 400 primary care conditions for all age groups. The system is still learning and can't help with certain dermatological and mental health conditions. The app provides health information for all age groups, however you must be over the age of 16 to use it.

You should not use Symptom Checker in an emergency or during pregnancy. In case of an emergency, you should always contact local emergency services.

Can I use Symptom Checker outside the UK?

The information the system provides is for UK residents only. If you live outside the UK, follow local or national advice

How do I know it’s accurate?

Symptom Checker has been created and reviewed by doctors and computer scientists. Powered by Babylon Health, it monitors the product on a continuous basis and conduct post-market surveillance to ensure compliance with the necessary safety standards and regulatory requirements.

How is it regulated?

Symptom Checker is powered by Babylon. Babylon is regulated in the EEA, with the Triage symptom checker CE-marked under the European Union's medical device regulatory framework. Triage is registered as a medical device with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA), the body responsible for regulating medical devices and pharmaceutical products in the United Kingdom.

For more information, please see the label.

How has the safety of the service been assessed?

Symptom Checker has undergone years of rigorous engineering and clinical testing to ensure that the information provided by the system is safe and appropriate. Babylon Health continuously monitor the software's performance as part of our post-market surveillance activities to ensure that the app always provides you with the most suitable information. Their medical review processes ensure that any issues uncovered can be promptly reviewed, addressed and updated in the system. However, please keep in mind that Symptom Checker is not a substitute for a doctor or other healthcare professional and is not intended for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.

Symptom Checker is designed to help you better understand your health by providing information to help direct you to the appropriate care and – in certain cases – by providing some information on the possible causes for your symptoms.

Can I delete my Symptom Checker data?

You can delete your digital Bupa credentials at any time, however you'll lose access to any linked digital services, including Bupa Blua Health, Be. Me, Bupa Connect, Bupa Touch and the consumer intermediary portal.

Your policies won't be affected – we won't delete records like your policy information or health assessments.

What this means for you:

  • This will delete your appointment and Symptom Checker history, including summary notes, referrals and fit notes.
  • You'll no longer be able to access Bupa Touch (web or app) to view digital cover documents, view health assessments, request treatment, or make dental claims online
  • You'll need to create a new account to use Bupa Blua Health or any other Bupa digital services again

If you would like to make an account deletion request, please click here.

Once requested we will aim to close your account within 3 weeks – you can still sign in until then. For more information about your rights in relation to your personal information, please refer to our Privacy Notice.
