A renewed focus on cancer care: recent developments in our cancer proposition

14 May 2026

Cancer remains a priority focus area for us at Bupa as we continue to develop our health insurance proposition in line with advances in clinical care, prevention and early diagnosis. Over recent months, this focus has led to a number of enhancements across cancer prevention pathways, specialist treatment access and clinical innovation — all designed to improve outcomes and experiences for our clients and support confident conversations with them.

Taken together, these developments reflect a proposition that is increasingly proactive, personalised and clinically led, supporting clients before, during and beyond a cancer diagnosis.

Leading the way in prevention and earlier intervention

Prevention and early detection play an increasingly important role in improving cancer outcomes. We’ve invested in preventative innovation that combines clinical expertise with new technologies to help identify risk earlier and enable timely action for eligible clients.

Specialist Cancer Centres

Through ConnectedCare, our clients can access our partner specialist specialist cancer centres for cancers including breast, bowel, prostate, gynaecological and gastroenterology.

These centres offer fast access to advanced diagnostics and coordinated care, with appointments often available within two working days for breast cancer and treatment typically starting within 31 days, (Q4, 2025, Bupa UK) around twice as fast as national NHS targets. Depending on pathway and clinical need.

This integrated model supports earlier diagnosis, quicker clinical decision-making and a more seamless client experience.

Breast cancer prevention pathways

We’ve enhanced our approach to breast cancer prevention through advanced DNA screening and specialist clinical assessment, helping assess an individual’s genetic risk before symptoms may occur.

From 1 September, eligible clients identified as being at increased risk will be able to access tailored prevention pathways, which may include specialist counselling, personalised medicine and, where clinically appropriate, risk-reducing surgery — all in line with policy terms and eligibility criteria.

The aim is to support informed, early action that may significantly reduce future risk.

AI-powered skin cancer detection

Through our partnership with Skin Analytics, eligible clients can benefit from AI-powered skin assessments designed to help identify suspicious skin lesions earlier, and as accurate as an expert dermatologist.

This technology supports faster triage and earlier diagnosis, improving outcomes while reducing avoidable delays in the care pathway.

A world-first blood cancer pathway

We’re the first private medical insurer to have announced a pioneering blood cancer pathway developed in partnership with The Royal Marsden.

This innovative pathway enables more personalised, evidence-based treatment decisions, helping clinicians determine the most appropriate care earlier in the treatment journey.

Supporting clients if cancer does occur

Alongside prevention and early detection, we continue to invest in specialist treatment access and personalised support for clients who are diagnosed with cancer.

The Bupa Cancer Promise underpins this approach. For eligible clients, cancer treatment is available for as long as it’s clinically appropriate — with no financial limits and no time restrictions — when care is covered by the policy and provided by our recommended consultants, hospitals and clinics. This ensures treatment decisions are driven by clinical need rather than cost considerations.

Eligible clients may also access breakthrough cancer drugs and treatments with robust, evidence-based clinical benefit — in some cases ahead of wider NHS availability or NICE approval* — alongside personalised support from our Oncology Support Team throughout their cancer journey.

*Available to eligible clients with relevant policy coverage.

Spotlight: breakthrough treatments covered under the Bupa Cancer Promise

We continue to cover advanced cancer treatments where there is clear clinical evidence of patient benefit, including:

  • Chemosaturation
A targeted treatment delivering high-dose chemotherapy directly to an affected organ — most commonly the liver — while isolating blood circulation. This allows the drug to concentrate at the tumour site while limiting overall toxicity. Clinical data shows one-year survival rates increasing from 25% to 60%.
  • Optune Gio
A wearable device used in the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer. It delivers low-intensity alternating electrical fields designed to disrupt cancer cell division and growth and has been shown to improve overall and progression-free survival compared to standard care.
  • Lutetium-177 therapy
We were the first private medical insurer to offer Lutetium-177 therapy to customers. This targeted nuclear medicine treatment delivers radiation directly to cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue, supporting improved tumour control with fewer side effects compared to traditional chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
