About our breast cancer screening
Breast cancer screenings can identify early signs of breast cancer before noticeable symptoms appear, like a breast lump. The earlier these are detected, the easier they are to treat.
This appointment is 30 minutes with a GP and, as well as a physical breast check and a mammogram, you’ll be able to discuss any worries you have about breast cancer.
Is a breast health cancer screening for me?
This is for anyone over 40 without symptoms who's worried about breast cancer. If you’ve noticed a lump or something that isn’t normal, see your GP or book a private GP appointment as soon as possible.
Breast cancer symptoms
- A lump or thicker skin in your breast
- A change in your breast shape
- A lump in your armpit
- Skin that looks red, puckered or dimpled like an orange
- Redness, a rash or crusting around your nipple
- Discharge from your nipple that isn’t milk
- Changes to your nipple, such as sunken into your breast or turned inwards

Before your appointment
We’ll send you two questionnaires before your appointment for you to fill in. We'll use it to understand your medical history and decide what tests will be more relevant.
What we check on the day
Breast cancer screening examination
During your appointment, the GP will talk through your questionnaire. You’ll also have a chance to discuss any breast concerns.
Mammogram
We use an X-ray to identify any early signs of breast cancer when they’re easier to treat. We look for cancer cells before noticeable symptoms of breast cancer are present.
Depending on what’s available, you may need to go to another health centre on a different day but we’ll help you book this.
What we’ll discuss with you
GP consultation
During your appointment, the GP will talk through your questionnaire. You’ll also have a chance to discuss any breast or cervical concerns.
After your appointment
Follow up referrals
Depending on your symptoms, examination or test results, the GP can organise a private referral. Or they can write to your NHS GP (with your consent) advising an NHS referral.
We’ll send you the results of your mammogram within 10 working days. If any action is needed, a doctor will attempt to call you about it..

You can pay for your appointment monthly, if it's over £250. This includes tests that you want to add on to your original appointment
What do ‘false’ results mean?
In some case, results can be a ‘false positive’ or a ‘false negative’. A false positive can mean you’re called back for further tests when you’re then found not to have a cancer. These can be more common if you’re pre-menopausal, but it’s still important to get this fully checked out.
A false negative means that you have a cancer but your screening result came back as normal.
These results are rare but it’s still stressful and upsetting. Whatever your result, it’s important to report any new symptoms you may develop after the test to a doctor.
