More from us
Drinking alcohol in moderation can be enjoyable and one or two drinks may even have some small benefit to your heart. Stick to the recommended guidelines (no more than three to four units a day for men and no more than two or three units a day for women) and you’re less likely to have serious health problems in later life.
The advice on drinking during pregnancy can be confusing. The Department of Health recommends pregnant women shouldn’t drink alcohol at all throughout their entire pregnancy; whereas the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends that it’s most important not to drink during the first three months.
The safest choice is still not to drink at all. Cut out the alcohol and you improve your chance of having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
Most of us know what it's like when you start to feel a bit merry following a few drinks. But there are lots of other effects that alcohol has on your body and mind that you might not know about.
How many units are in a glass of wine or pint of lager? Use our calculator to find out.
Do you have an overpowering urge to drink alcohol and find you can't limit or stop drinking once you start? Anxiety or irritability, drinking before midday and feeling unable to cut down are all signs of alcohol dependence.
