International fire fighters day: Care home enjoys visit from local fire crew

12 June 2023

Residents at Lindley Grange Bupa Care Home have been visited by Rastrick Fire Fighters for a visit to show residents the fire truck.

The afternoon visit was organised by Lindley Grange Activity Co-ordinator Rebecca Crowe and Rastrick Fire Station who came along with a fire engine to talk to the residents and introduce themselves. Residents were invited to have a tour of the engine, and the opportunity to use the fire hose. The afternoon was complete with tea and cake as they enjoyed chatting to the firefighters, everybody in attendance had a wonderful time.

One resident, Ruth Odell, aged 69, commented: “I enjoyed being outside with the good looking firemen, I even blew one of them a kiss! They let me have a go at the fire hose, it was heavy but with the help of the young gentleman I managed it.”

Another resident, Pat Lockwood, aged 94, commented: “It was a different experience in which I fully enjoyed, you don’t realise how big a fire engine is until you’re stood next to it. It made me so happy and really did make my day.

Rebecca Crowe, Activity Coordinator commented: “It was wonderful for the fire crew to visit us and let our residents experience some of the engine’s equipment - it shows there’s nothing too big we can’t try. Both the residents and the staff really enjoy these visits as we love to be involved with the local community and it’s a great chance for our resident with dementia to try new things. The smiles it gives are heart-warming for all the staff to witness.”

Residents at Lindley Grange Bupa Care Home are looking forward to more visits from fire fighters in the coming months.
