Wirral resident celebrates 101st milestone birthday

02 March 2025

The Manor House Bupa Care Home recently celebrated resident Ethel (Hetty) Griffiths’ 101st birthday.

Staff at The Manor House decorated Hetty’s room with balloon and banners, and the kitchen team cooked her favourite meal and baked a homemade birthday cake.

Home Manager, Angela McCard, commented: “Hetty doesn’t like a lot of fuss, but she loved her birthday celebrations, and it was great to see her so happy! Her two sons joined us to celebrate, and everyone loved the birthday cake, singing her a happy birthday.”

Hetty Griffin was born in Kensington, Liverpool. She trained in touch typing and shorthand dictation after school and went on to become a personal assistant to the directors at a demolition factory in Liverpool.

After the war, she moved to Prescot and married, becoming a stay-at-home wife and mother to two children, David and Phillip. Once the boys were old enough, Hetty returned to work part time, on the production line at United Biscuits Liverpool and worked there until retirement.

Hetty enjoys many hobbies at The Manor House, including dancing, sewing and crochet, she spends her time colouring magnificent drawings she displays in her room.

When asked her advice for the younger generations, Hetty said: “Being very thoughtful, knowledgeable, and kind to others has stood me in good stead for a long and happy life. So, be kind and willing to learn.”
