27 March 2023

Residents at Colonia Court Bupa Care Home have recently enjoyed an animal therapy session with a visit from an array of animals including a meerkats, bearded dragons, and tortoises.

The afternoon animal therapy session was organised by Sharia Harvey, Senior Activity Co-ordinator at the home, through Maldon Promenade Petting Zoo who brought the animals along.

The visit took place in the lounge where residents were able to interact with the animals, and the afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. Maldon Petting Zoo are well known for their animal welfare standards and are supported by experienced zoological and pet care experts.

One resident, Dorothy, aged 98 commented: “I was very excited to see the animals especially the meerkat, it was very fluffy and I enjoyed stroking it. I can’t wait to see the animals again soon.”

Another resident, Percy, aged 90 commented: “It was a lovely afternoon with the petting zoo. I got to see and hold lots of different animals. I was most surprised by the feel of the bearded dragon, I have to say, it was a little rough!”

Jiji George, Home Manager at Colonia Court Bupa Care Home, commented: “It was wonderful to welcome Maldon Petting Zoo to Colonia Court for our animal therapy session. The residents had a lovely time and it was a very informative session where the residents held the animals and learnt all about them. Animal therapy sessions are well known to reduce stress and bring a sense of calm to older generations, so we thoroughly enjoy welcoming animals into the home.”

Colonia Court are looking forward to welcoming Maldon Petting Zoo back in the coming weeks and months for more animal therapy sessions.
