National gardening week: Cottenham Court care home treats gardening fanatic to new greenhouse

Carers at Cottenham Court Bupa Care Home in Cambridge have treated resident Richard Gregory to a brand new greenhouse, complete with an array of seasonal plants and vegetables, in a bid to support Richard’s wellbeing and happiness.
Richard, aged 75, has a long-time love of all things gardening, having been an agricultural researcher for 31 years and studied for a degree in Horticulture and a master’s degree in Applied Genetics.
The Cottenham Court team recognised Richard’s love of gardening and decided to champion his green fingers, with the purchase of a new green house where he could sow seeds, take cuttings to raise new plants and grow tender plants.
Richard commented: “When I came to Cottenham Court, I was amazed to find that I could roam the gardens and enjoy my favourite pastime, so to find out that within three weeks of being a resident, I have been bought a green house, is so wonderful.”
Nomvelo Nyathi, Home Manager at Cottenham Court, commented: “Here at Cottenham Court we are always keen to enhance the quality of life of our residents, so by providing Richard with the opportunity to enjoy his favourite hobby, we are thrilled to have been able to provide him with a new greenhouse to boost his wellbeing and independence.”
Due to personal health conditions, it is important Richard maintains an active lifestyle, so being outside, moving his body and gardening has a positive impact on both his physical and mental health.
Richard and the care home team are also keen for his fellow residents to enjoy the greenhouse. Richard commented: “I hope the greenhouse is an incentive for other residents to come and get involved with the joy of gardening.”
Richard has also recently been hosting some gardening classes with his fellow residents, where he has shared his knowledge about different plants and how to look after them.
When asked what his top tips are for gardening beginners, Richard shared: “Make sure to take advantage of all free information and advice you are given. Whether it is on seed packets, at garden centres, or even from your neighbours, any information can be useful. I also recommend that beginners to take the time to enjoy their garden – everything from having BBQs to using flowers for indoor flower arrangements – it’s important to take time to admire your work.”
