Celebrations fit for a king: Local care home celebrates the coronation of King Charles

16 June 2023

Residents at Southlands Bupa Care Home have welcomed the King’s Coronation with three days of spectacular celebrations.

The celebrations began on Saturday as the coronation was showcased on a big screen with a buffet was on offer for lunch for residents, their families, and friends.

Whilst guests enjoyed watching the Coronation, they were treated to bucks’ fizz, prosecco, and a King’s Punch; a creation by Southlands’ Chef, Neil Ballinger, containing a collation of juices with a tot of the resident’s favourite tipple!! A very popular one was half and half with a glass of prosecco!

On Sunday, residents enjoyed a traditional roast beef lunch followed by local singer Emma James visiting the home to sing them a selection of classic songs, including “Rule Britannia” and a host of songs from our favourite musicals!

The final day of celebrations was hosted at Southlands on Monday, including a day of reflection where residents chatted about their different memories of late Queen Elizabeth and the newly crowned King Charles.

Going the extra mile to make the day even more memorable for residents, carers at Southlands Bupa Care Home also created a custom-made throne for residents to enjoy sitting on while reflecting and sharing memories together.

One resident Jean aged 82 commented: “I had a wonderful bank holiday celebrating the King’s Coronation, it was a spectacular day and the staff at Southlands made sure it was a day to remember. The best part was watching him be crowned I was in my early teens so whilst I remember the Queen’s coronation – it was fantastic to see it all in colour – and all the pomp- and circumstance. I raised a glass of Guinness!!!

Another resident, Shirley aged 86 commented: “It was quite the weekend of celebrations at Southlands. I had great fun with my family and friends who came along. My weekend was definitely topped off with the beautiful lunch on Sunday and listening to Emma the wonderful singer, her songs brought back many wonderful memories.”

Helene Ballinger, Resident Manager at Southlands Bupa Care Home, commented: “It was a great weekend at the home celebrating the coronation of King Charles. It was a jam-packed weekend of celebrations and I think it is safe to say we did our best to celebrate in style. We also heard some wonderful stories from some of our residents who remember the coronation of the Queen, quite an achievement!”
