Care home makes residents' biking dreams come true

14 June 2023

Residents at Queensmount Bupa Care Home were recently joined by bikers from the Dorset Nomad Motor Cycling Club to take a trip down memory lane.

The visit was organised by Zoe McCarthy, Home Manager at Queensmount, and the care home hosted an afternoon of tea and cakes whilst the bikers showed and talked about their bikes with residents.

The visit was organised as part of Bupa’s #NeverTooLate initiative that supports residents to experience new things, continue with their hobbies and rediscover former interests. Two residents, David Mason and Gillian Hoskin, have particularly fond memories of biking from their younger years.

David, aged 91, is a former motorcyclist who spent his early years travelling with his family on his Royal Enfield Bike. David commented: “I had a wonderful time at the visit from the Dorset Nomad Motor Cycling Club, I used to spend lots of time on the road traveling with my wife and children, so it brought back many lovely memories.”

Gillian, aged 82, has fond memories of travelling on the back of her dad’s motorbike, and commented: “I was so excited to see the bikers, I used to spend as much time as I could on the back of my dad’s motorbike going on different adventures. They are incredibly special memories, so I really enjoyed reminiscing with the people who came along.”

Zoe McCarthy, Home Manager at Queensmount Bupa Care Home, commented: “We really enjoyed welcoming the bikers from Dorset Nomad Motor Cycling Club. When we talk to residents about the past, their faces light up and after hearing David and Gillian’s wonderful stories we thought they would especially enjoy the visit. The #NeverTooLate initiative is a great scheme that really does boost our residents’ wellbeing.”

Staff and residents at Queensmount are looking forward to organising more afternoon sessions with different groups, continuing to reconnect residents with their hobbies and passions.
