Dementia resident receives letter from ‘Beloved’ football club
A resident at Lindley Grange Bupa Care Home and a life-long football fan, Lawrence Binns, has received a heartfelt letter from his beloved club.
The 74-year-old resident has lived at Lindley Grange for 3 years, after moving to the home following his dementia diagnosis.
During his time at the home, he has become known among carers and fellow residents for his love of football, specifically his dedication to Arsenal FC – a team he has been devoted to his entire life.
He has formed a special bond with the care home’s activity co-ordinator, Becky Hirst, who is also a huge Arsenal supporter. Becky and Lawrence often watch matches together, listen to Arsenal chants on Youtube, reminisce over past games and chat about the team’s players.
Wanting to do something special for Lawrence, Becky reached out to the club to share Lawrence’s passion for the team and asked them to share a special message for him in return.
Much to Becky’s delight, the team responded within 24 hours. Becky said: “Lawrence is such an amazing man with huge character, we wanted to do something for him that would make him smile. I was thrilled when someone at Arsenal got back to me so quickly. All football fans know how much your club means to you, so to receive a bespoke letter filled with such emotion is truly special.”
When asked how he felt about receiving his letter, Lawrence said: “I was absolutely blown away when I received the letter. The words were so meaningful and kind, it was really touching. I am an Arsenal fan through-and-through, it is a huge part of my story, so being able to continue my love for football is very important. Becky and my other carers do an amazing job of making me feel special and do all they can to encourage my interests and hobbies.”
Carers at Lindley Grange plan to frame Lawrence’s letter and display it in his bedroom. Becky is also looking forward to watching Arsenal in the premier league this month with Lawrence.
