Care home celebrates resident’s milestone 100th birthday

13 September 2024

Brenda Martin, a resident at Eglantine Villa Bupa Care Home, has recently celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by her loving family and friends.

To celebrate her milestone birthday, Brenda was joined by her family and friends for a Great Gatsby themed party in homage to the era in which Brenda was born, complete with decorations and props.

Brenda was keen to thank everyone for her party saying: “I feel very special and had a wonderful day.”

The team at Eglantine Villa bought her a huge chocolate cake and a chocolate hamper as she has a sweet tooth and Brenda added: “Chocolate is my favourite and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

Bryony John, Home Manager at Eglantine Villa, commented: “We are so happy to have been able to share Brenda’s birthday celebrations with her. Celebrating milestones and achievements is incredibly important to us at Eglantine Villa, it boosts the well-being of all our residents.”

Brenda was born in Suffolk and lived in a village called Cowlinge near Newmarket and Bury St. Edmunds. Her parents ran a village shop and post office where she would help out and, during the war, she delivered post and telegrams in her village. She then went on to work in a factory making valves and radio equipment and in later life worked in a plumbing and hardware shop.

Brenda married Reginald, known as Rex, on 6th June 1949 and was married for 67 years before her husband passed away in 2016. When first married they lived in a maisonette in Barnehurst, moving to Bexleyheath in 1956 where they bought their family home which they lived in for the next 66 years. Brenda has two children, Sue and Christopher; five grandchildren, Victoria, Toby, Edward, Matthew, and James; and three great grandchildren, Cara, Oskar, and Luna.
