Local care home resident discovers Birmingham's rich history

A Birmingham care home resident and history buff, Jean East, recently attended a captivating history talk led by esteemed local historian, Professor Carl Chinn MBE.
Known at Pebble Mill Bupa Care Home for her passion for the past, staff at Jean’s care home arranged for her to participate in the event at the local library, with home manager Heidi Scott accompanying alongside. Jean was thrilled to hear the intriguing stories behind ‘The Real Peaky Blinders’ – a topic she has passionately explored through Professor Chinn’s publications.
The talk was led by Professor Chinn, who is an author and radio presenter with a national reputation for his dedication to researching Birmingham’s history and popularisation.
Speaking about her visit, Jean said: “I was absolutely delighted to attend Carl’s event after reading many of his books. It was fascinating to learn about the real Peaky Blinders – their history, their attire, and the vibrant dynamics of Birmingham in the 1920s. Carl is an extraordinary gentleman; it was amazing to witness his depth of knowledge. He believes that every person leaves their mark on history and has a unique story to tell.”
Heidi Scott, Home Manager at Pebble Mill Bupa Care Home, added: “Supporting Jean in her passion for Birmingham’s history was a privilege. It was an incredible opportunity for her to engage with a subject she loves while connecting with the local community. At Pebble Mill we are committed to fostering our residents’ personal interests and aiding them in continuing their hobbies.”
