Animal therapy brings joy to care home residents

09 April 2024

Residents at St George’s Bupa Care Home were recently treated to a delightful visit from Browells Wood Pet Therapy who brought with them a dog, guinea pigs, rabbits and even a lamb called Mary who was only 8 weeks old.

The animals visited the Cobham care home where staff and residents had had enormous fun stroking and interacting with the animals from the comfort of their armchairs. This heartwarming experience brought smiles to the faces of the residents and Mary the lamb was the hit of the afternoon with residents even feeding her bottles of milk.

Senior Activities Coordinator Amanda Jackson said, “The afternoon was a great success. Everyone enjoyed meeting all the pets. It was a lovely experience, and our residents haven’t stopped talking about it. We’re thrilled to make such beautiful memories for them.”

Resident, John Mugford said, “I really enjoyed the afternoon, especially meeting the lamb”, while resident, Margaret Liens added, “The animals are all so lovely. It was wonderful – a nice treat.”

Pet therapy offers significant benefits, for example stroking the animals triggers the release of endorphins that provide calming effect.
