Gavin studied dentistry at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa where he was awarded the Byron Moore Scholarship from the Zimbabwe Dental Association and the Oral B Exchange award for academic and clinical excellence. In his final year, Gavin won the prestigious Dental Association of South Africa Orthodontic medal, setting the tone for his future career.
Gavin subsequently moved to the UK and worked as a general dental practitioner for several years, before deciding to pursue a career in orthodontics. In 2001, he started a three-year training programme in orthodontics at Guy’s Hospital in London and the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead.
He was awarded a master’s degree in orthodontics (MSc) before gaining his Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2004. Wanting to broaden his experience in treating complex and multidisciplinary orthodontic patients, Gavin decided to further his training as a senior registrar at the Eastman Dental Hospital (UCL) and Kingston hospitals, and attained his Fellowship in Orthodontics (FOrth) in Edinburgh in 2006.
Gavin has been a consultant in orthodontics at Wexham Park Hospital/Frimley Health and Northwick Park Hospital and relocated to Kent in 2016 to the East Kent Hospitals Foundation Trust (EKHUFT).
Alongside practising privately in London, Gavin is also a consultant in orthodontics at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford where he treats a variety of complex orthodontic cases. Gavin is involved in teaching and training new orthodontists and foundation dentists and is a lecturer on the Greater London Orthodontic Specialist course.
Gavin’s areas of interest include facial aesthetics in adult and paediatric orthodontic patients, lingual orthodontics, working alongside other specialists in multidisciplinary treatment (including restorative dentistry, periodontal treatment, facial anomalies and orthognathic surgery) as well as working with patients of all ages with cleft lip and palate.
In 2014, Gavin was awarded the Gilbert Scott bursary to gain experience in nasoalveolar moulding in cleft babies at the prestigious Institute of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in New York, USA.
