Hello, I'm Noman.
I'm a specialist endodontist at Colchester dental specialist centre.
As an endodontist my main role is saving teeth which would otherwise need to be extracted.
And as a specialist, I normally treat teeth and which are deemed a bit more complex for a general dentist to treat because teeth can have variations of anatomy and that can be from quite simple cases to very difficult cases.
The other sort of thing I do quite often is when a root canal has been done in the past by another dentist, but for some reason that root canal has become infected or fails.
So it's sort of correcting previous treatment.
That's a big part of my job.
And thirdly, sometimes patients can attend with difficult diagnosis where the they've got pain which a dentist cannot figure out.
And as an endodontist we are sort of trained to really be quite detective.
It's sometimes figuring out problems that are really difficult to sort out.
Basically a small part of my treatment also involves doing some root canal surgery and that's a sort of a niche within the within the specialty where we can sometimes do and sort of very skilled and very, it's called endodontic microsurgery.
It's very fine surgery to again save the tooth, that would otherwise need to be taken out.
Quite often when patients hear that they need a root canal treatment, they can be faithful about all the, I guess stigma there is outside.
So what I tend to do, every patient that is referred, I have a sort of a 30 minute consultation with them.
And in that consultation I spend the beginning part just to address any patient's anxieties, really establish a close relationship with them and just put putting them at ease because most of the times and patients anxieties are because of something that happened in the past to them or due to misinformation.
So I take a great deal of time I just addressing those issues before we actually move into the teeth.
And I think that's quite important because and run a patient, she's a clinician that I haven't met before.
First and foremost, it's about that interpersonal relationship that needs to form.
And then only once patients feel comfortable, they can trust and we can carry on with the rest of the treatment.
In my experience, quite often patients just need to be given time and space to talk.
And I'd quite like to just listen to some of the things that they have to say.
And I found that when patients feel rushed or not listen to, that's when they can feel a bit more anxious.
So my main strategy is just to sit and listen to them, allow them to speak, allow them to voice any fears or concerns that they have and then and basically guide the conversation based on that.
So Colchester Dental Specialist Centre is a unique practice because we have got a long established list of referring dentists and we have all the dental specialists working under one roof.
We have got all the kits and all the materials that I need as a specialist, which isn't often the case, and I think that's important because I don't want equipment or anything like that to be a limiting factor giving the best care.
So the fact that we have everything that you could possibly imagine means I can give the best care to the patient.
